Episode 04 - The Scrivano House

December 18, 2017

Courtney and Joey Scrivano had been living in Joey’s bachelor pad for the first two years of their marriage. When they had their son, they decided it was about time for a little extra space. Because they both work at Baylor University, the home’s location was an important factor. They ultimately chose this charming Tudor-style house in a historic area of Waco that’s close to Baylor’s campus.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

The inspiration materials I used to interpret the style of the family’s home

This beautiful, Tudor-style cottage home was already full of original character, so we decided to focus on enhancing that character, rather than going too modern. I was inspired by familiar shapes, classic patterns, neutral colors, and using a few of those classic, familiar patterns to make a few bold, unexpected statements throughout.

EXTERIOR

Objective | Enhance the Tudor Cottage style while preserving the home’s natural character.

LIVING ROOM

Objective | Give the room an update without detracting from its original character.

DINING ROOM

Objective Give the room an update that matches the rest of the home and makes the transition from living area to kitchen feel seamless

KITCHEN

Objective | Open up the kitchen to create enough space for an eat-in breakfast nook

MASTER BEDROOM

Objective | Utilize natural light to make this room a rejuvenating escape for the Scrivanos

MASTER BATHROOM

Objective | Adjust the layout to make space for a larger, more functional master bathroom

Homes where so many original details have been so well-preserved, like this one, give me a wonderful palette to start with, and getting to work with a family that loves original character as much as I do makes it fun.

Welcome to your new home, Scrivano family!

Interview With Homeowner

Q: What is your favorite room in the house, and why?

A: It probably changes daily. Right now, we are enjoying the front living area. We love the natural light from the windows and the wooden beams they added during renovation. It’s the perfect combination of polished, yet cozy, and everywhere you look, you have a great view. From that room, you can see the refurbished porch, the front yard, the gorgeous fireplace and the stunning kitchen.

Q: What is your favorite feature in the house, and why?

A: The banquet in the kitchen, hands down. We use it every day. Even though the dining room is right next to the kitchen, it’s nice to have the casual spot to sit and have coffee or get work done. We recently had our son’s first birthday party and loved having the extra seating. Nico is not a big fan of his highchair, so I can sit him next to me on the banquet bench while we eat, and he feels like a big boy. It’s a beautiful design feature in the kitchen and just endlessly useful.

Q: What was your favorite thing about the renovation process?

A: For us, it was really fantastic to turn over the renovation project completely. We were able to provide a lot of input on the front-end of what we wanted and needed. Once the renovation started, we were kept in the loop and involved in any major decisions, but didn’t have to deal with a million little decisions or daily issues that crop up when you do your own renovation. We felt really confident in the design and construction teams, and with our busy schedules, I don’t know how we would have ever been able to get it done at this level on our own.

Q: Did you get the rest of the house renovated, or what was shown on the show?

A: The Magnolia team touched every room in the house. What you didn’t see was Nico’s nursery and the whole back part of the house, which includes a guest bedroom, jack-and-jill bath and a family room. They were also able to relocate the laundry from the garage, which Joey really appreciates! Before the renovation, it was like two separate houses in one. Now it all feels really cohesive and fresh and cozy. We didn’t want this house to be a never-ending project, so it was truly a blessing to get it all done at once!

Q: How was your own personal style revealed in your home?

A: We both appreciate many different styles, from farmhouse to industrial to European, so it was important to us that the character and the personality of the home lead the design, with just touches of what we both like. I don’t know how they did it, but they stayed true to the home while bringing in some traditional elements for Courtney and clean, contemporary touches for Joey (including that big, bold tub in the master!). The black and white tile in the kitchen and exposed brick in the pantry are definitely two focal points that feel so right for our home. It all blends together in a really fun and surprising way, but nothing seems out of place or forced. Joanna and the design team are pros and have such great vision and feel for spaces. We never doubted them for a second, but it’s truly so much better than we ever could have dreamed.
