The Jacksons were looking for a forever home in a small suburb of Waco. They loved the idea of having a house with a coastal feel, so we knew, living in central Texas, that we’d have our work cut out for us. The Jacksons were specifically looking for a home office, a layout that worked well for cooking and entertaining, and a comfortable guest room for when their friends and families visit.

the inspiration elements I used for the Jackson home

They wanted a home that reflected the simple, relaxed style of a coastal villa. I drew a lot of inspiration from the warm tones of natural wood combined with cool grays and subtle texture from materials like linen and stucco.

Objective | Open up the floor plan while keeping the living and dining rooms as clearly defined spaces

Objective | Update and brighten the room to give it an inviting and cozy feeling that’s perfect for hosting family meals

Objective | Double the size of the kitchen by opening it up and making the best use of available space

Objective | Designate a workspace for the family that doesn’t feel completely separate from the rest of the gathering spaces

Objective | Carve out a room that is multifunctional as a guest room, an extra work space, and a gameroom

Objective | Create a bath that’s easily accessible for guests

Objective | Transform the home’s style from a traditional ranch to a warm and inviting coastal villa

This home ended up being a perfect inviting space for this family of four to call home. I loved the idea of mixing in a coastal feeling for them, and I had so much fun finding unique ways to incorporate their style while keeping it subtle and functional. Welcome home, Jackson family!

Interview With Homeowner

Q: What is your favorite room in the house and why?

A: I’d have to say it’s the kitchen because it’s our most used room. It’s the room where everyone gathers. But I would say that probably my favorite design element in the kitchen would be all the brick. It’s just beautiful and really warms up the space. The biggest impact of the space is the massive island. I’ve always dreamed of having a big island and this one is huge!

Q: What is your favorite feature in the house and why?

A: The Murphy bed is one of our favorite features, partly because we had no idea how often it would get used! With family in town from all over the country this summer for our daughter’s wedding, it was put to good use very quickly! But then there’s the shiplap window barn door and all the antique doors...how in the world do you just pick one?

Q: How did you decide on the design of the house? What inspired the choice?

A: Hawaii is our happy place. We love the beach and we really love the ocean, but we live in Waco, Texas. I really wanted the home to have the same beach feel, really light and airy, but with a the rustic touch Joanna is so good at. I wanted the beachy feeling that was also warm and homey, and I loved how she combined the two.

Hey! You can grab candle sticks that look identical to these at Hobby Lobby! I’m not sure if they’re the ones used on the show, but they look the same! Hope this helps!
