Choosing the best rug for your space

November 23, 2016

Finding your personal style and picking out the right rug for your room is the hard part, but it can be just as tough to know what exactly your space needs as far as rug size and furniture placement. So today, I’m sharing an easy-to-follow rug size and placement guide to help you get the look you want in your house.

Take a look at the graphic below to see what the placement and standard sizes are for your living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom. Keep in mind that these aren’t hard and fast rules, and your room may not fit perfectly into these categories. If that’s the case, you can determine a correct rug size by measuring your space, taking into consideration the size of your furniture, and then ordering a rug based on your measurements.

I’ve loved getting to introduce you to my rugs, pillows and throws over the past few months! Remember you can find my collection at retailers near you and also here at magnoliamarket.com. The newest installment of my rug collection will be coming soon! We‘ve added all new collections, and each one has its own unique story that I can’t wait to share with you, so stay tuned.

Tag me on Instagram (@joannagaines) if you post a picture of any pieces of my collection in your house! I’d love to see what you choose and how you incorporated it into you space.

Hi Joanna and Chip, I am a big fan of Fixer Upper. I love to watch you work magic on homes. My husband and I are renovating a small home in Bluffton, SC. The home has an open floor plan with the dining/living area with a vaulted ceiling. The kitchen is pretty small and I wondered if you might have some storage ideas if I sent you some photos. You always have such amazing results.
    Thank you!

Just curious. Did you ever receive a reply? Your situation sounds similar to mine and any advice you received may help me as well. Thanks!

HI Joanna, absolutely love your show. I'm in the process of renovating our kitchen. Do you have a service whereby I can send you a photo of my kitchen and you could give me some ideas on how to improve it? I live in Australia and just love everything you do.

    Hi Joanna!

My Husband and I live in Victoria, BC, Canada and we watch your show religiously. Your sense of design is so inspiring to me as an artist. I swoon over your colour palettes, varied textures and contrasting shapes. My husband has been waiting patiently for me to finish my masters degree to have a baby. Low and behold our "Lil' Bean" planted him/herself in my belly late December and will arrive late September just after I graduate! Alas! With a nursery needed my first opportunity in our home to exercise some of the design skills I have picked up from you presents itself. Eek! So exciting! I am wondering if you wouldn't mind speaking to a rug placement in a nursery set-up? I have been collecting items and dreaming of the final product yet in my head I am still pondering rug placement. Our nurse is on the small side and square shaped with a large window on one wall looking out to the backyard. We are also lucky to have beautiful oak floors that are a warm honey colour, yay for wood floors! I look forward to hearing from you :)

Many thanks to you from Vancouver Island!

    Dear Joanna,

We watched your show at our Dutch television, but unfortunatly it stopped. Hopefully we can watch your new season (we're still behind, I guess).
Love your style and I think you are very beautifull loving people. My house here in the Netherlands as a similat style, but we do not have wooden walls. It is all stone. So the shiplap is not what we use that much. In a view rooms I could need your advice, but Waco is much to far away :(
    With love,
