Bryce and Emily have been in Waco for years and plan to stay for a long time, but with three little girls at home, they knew it was time for more space. They fell in love with this two-story house in the Waco suburb of Woodway, Texas. It was stuck in the 80s, but it checked off all their must-haves to become their forever home. With some cosmetic updates and layout adjustments, I knew it would be perfect for this family of five.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

the inspiration elements I used to interpret the style of the house on a hill

The family loved the look and feel of a clean and modern traditional style with elements of interest throughout the space. To hone in on this style, I drew inspiration from soft textures, unexpected shapes, and clean accents.

Mudroom design tip from Joanna Gaines

This home brought me back to intentional simplicity. I loved the airiness of it and I can just imagine those three girls growing up and making memories in this home. Thinking about the life that will happen within these walls is the part of design that excites me the most, and getting to work with wonderful families like the Sandvalls is what makes my job so fun.

Welcome home, Sandvalls!

Interview With Homeowner

Q: What is your favorite room in the house, and why?

A: My favorite room in the house is the laundry room! I love the herringbone floors and lockers for all the girls' backpacks and shoes. Joanna designed it to keep us organized and functioning. Since we are a family of five, we spend a LOT of time in this room, doing laundry or packing bags for school, so we are thrilled to do everyday in a beautiful space! My husband, Bryce’s, favorite room is the kitchen! The island is a beautiful statement piece and provides an incredible gathering space for our family. Reimagining the dining room, kitchen, and breakfast nook was absolutely the right call. The kitchen is definitely the center of our home.

Q: Why did you apply to Fixer Upper?

A: We applied for Fixer Upper on a whim! Since we’ve lived in Waco for the last 9 years (and four years for college before that), we have been casual observers and cheerleaders of Magnolia’s growth. When our family needed more space, we thought “wouldn’t it would be cool if…” and here we are today!

Q: What was your favorite thing about the renovation process?

A: Our favorite day was DESIGN DAY! Bryce and I loved seeing what Joanna was dreaming up for our home. It was amazing to see it in person (well…on a computer screen) and to talk about what we liked and didn’t like about the design. We left that conversation feeling like Joanna understood us and cared deeply about creating intentional spaces that worked best for our family. We were very excited leaving the farm that day and could not WAIT for reveal day!

Needing to know which rug is in the living room. I'm assuming it is from the Magnolia Rug Collection?

I really need to know where the chairs in the living room came from. The ones with the vertical tucks in the backs. They're exactly what I'm looking for.
